Dan Shamir, who was Maccabi Tel Aviv's assistant coach in the last 3 years, will get his first chance to be a head coach in the team where he grew - Hapoel Jerusalem!

Hapoel Jerusalem talked about names as Yanakis, Kattash, Gino, and who's not, actually. But eventually, in a surprising move, the team announced this morning that their new coach will be Dan Shamir, who signed on a 2-year deal with the team.

The 31.5 year old started his way as a player in Maccabi Jerusalem. He started coaching when he was just 17, and after a year in Kentucky University, he started working as a coach in Hapoel Jerusalem's youth department. He led the U-16 team to the state championship, worked with the U-18 team as well and was promoted to the assistant coach position in the senior team, under Yoram Harush.

He served 3 years as Harush, Erez Edelstein and Gadi Keidar's assistant, as well as being the assistant in Israel's cadets NT. In 03/4 he signed with Maccabi Tel Aviv, with which he won two trebels as a second assistant, and one double as the first assistant.

It'll be Shamir's first job as a head coach. In 02/3 he coached one league game as an interim replacement, and led Jerusalem to a 90-86 win in Haifa. The new Red head coach was supposed to stay one more year with Maccabi Tel Aviv.
